Ten years after the self-immolation of Mohammad Bouazizi, dis:orient e.V. is planning a small exhibition for the anniversary of this beginning – a revolutionary process that has been transforming the world and our city until today. Berlin is being asserted as a center for Arab culture and politics, the ‘Capital of Exiles’ as writer Amro Ali called it. The exhibition, thus, looks at Berlin as a place of exile and home-making: What is exile? Which identities, visions, and memories permeate Berlin as a place for (of?) the displaced? What are the possibilities and struggles of being here?
Our exhibition will take place from the 10th of December and will be located in various publicly accessible venues that resonate with this theme. The artefacts and individual works exhibited in these different places across Berlin shall be connected through an audio walking guide that will lead the visitors from one venue to the other. Thereby we want to make issues of exile and migration accessible to a wider public and enhance the visibility of marginalised voices.
To kick-off the exhibition we organised a live-talk with musical performance on 10th of December starting at 6.30pm! Camel Alabbasi, one of the artists, will give a live interview and talk about her art as well as her experience preparing for the exhibition. Also, we are very happy to welcome Abeer Ali together with Nabil Arbaain who will present their musical storytelling performance.

Zehn Jahre nach der Selbstverbrennung von Mohammad Bouazizi, plant dis:orient e.V. eine kleine Ausstellung zum Jahrestag dieses Anfangs. Es war der Start eines revolutionären Prozesses, der die Welt und unsere Stadt bis heute verändert. Berlin wird als Zentrum der arabischen Kultur und Politik gehandelt, als “Capital of Exiles”(dt. „Hauptstadt des Exils”), wie es der Schriftsteller Amro Ali nannte. Die Ausstellung betrachtet Berlin somit als einen Ort des Exils und der Heimat-Schaffens: Was ist Exil? Welche Identitäten, Visionen und Erinnerungen durchdringen Berlin als Ort für (von) Vertriebene(n)? Was sind die Möglichkeiten und Herausforderungen, hier zu sein?
Die Ausstellung startet am 10. Dezember und wird an verschiedenen öffentlich zugänglichen Orten stattfinden, die dieses Thema verkörpern. An diesen verschiedenen Orten in Berlin ausgestellte Kunstwerke und individuelle Arbeiten werden durch einen Audio-Guide verbunden, der Besucher*innen von einem Veranstaltungsort zum nächsten führt. So sollen Fragen des Exils und der Migration einer breiteren Öffentlichkeit zugänglich und marginalisierte Stimmen sichtbarer gemacht werden.
Die Ausstellung wird offiziell mit einem Live-Talk und musikalischem Highlight am kommenden Donnerstag um 18:30 Uhr eröffnet. Die Künstlerin Carmel Alabbasi wird über ihre Kunst und die Erfahrungen in Vorbereitung auf die Ausstellung berichten. Ebenso sehr freuen wir uns auf die musikalische Storytelling Performance von Abeer Ali zusammen mit Nabil Arbaain.
